What are you most excited about for the 2015 MnSearch Summit?

I’m most excited about getting to know an internet marketing community I have no familiarity with whatsoever. I’ve never been to Minnesota so it’s an exciting prospect to hear about the region, learn about it’s challenges, and get to know the people that work there.

What can attendees expect to take away from your session?

I hope people can take away a process for generating content that can explosively grow their business. And if they used parts of the process before, hopefully I’ll cover a few more bits or a nice add-on that can add significant value for them.

What one piece of career advice do you wish someone gave you when you started your marketing career?

I honestly feel like my career has gone as smoothly as it could have gone. I was lucky to have a mentor in Sujan Patel that was a great first boss, so if I was going to make this actionable and helpful, I’d say find a great mentor. Start somewhere that even if it doesn’t pay a lot, can be a jump-off point for future growth. Invest in yourself. Also, it’s not really career advice, but invest in index funds, not stocks. You do not have the time to be a stock picker. I lost a decent chunk of change in 2014 thinking I was.

What is the best part about working for Siege Media?

The best part about working for Siege Media is being able to define my own destiny. If things go poorly, I don’t have anyone to blame things on other than myself. That makes it a roller coaster ride – of good and bad – that’s amazing to be on.

What is the biggest content marketing mistake that you still see organizations making in 2015?

Publishing because they were told they need to publish. Still an amazing amount of people publishing once a day or even a week with the thought that that’ll do something for them, without any real plan as to how that informs their business goals, or even, how people will see that content. Incredible.

What have you always loved or wondered about the State of Minnesota?

I honestly have no idea what to expect. As a Californian, my idea of Minnesota is the Vikings, Twins, and the cold. I’m really not sure what else. I’m not sure what that says, but regardless, I am always pumped to travel, and I’m excited to check out the state.

Where do you find inspiration for your own content marketing ideas?

I look everywhere, but some of my favorite places are reddit infographics, laughing squid, design taxi, and also SEMRush, where I look to search volume to inform where demand lies – and how we can create better content based on that.
